What Causes Numbness And Pain Behind Leg And Knee?

Hi, I have been experiencing a numbness and pain in the back of my leg and especially the back of my knee? I m fine when up and about, it s still there but not to bad. When I get into bed or sit with my legs up it really starts to irritate. It is mostly on my left leg but can also be the right occasionally. I work in a furniture shop and have done for the past 19 years where I do lift and move things around and have found myself with back problems over the past four or five years. Nothing serious that needed surgery but doctor has given me cocodomol and naproxen for pain and have been to chiropractor which also helped a lot. I have not been to one for about two years as my back doesn t hurt so much now just twinges now and again. Look forward to your reply, Kind regards Laura

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have numbness and pain behind leg and knee. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like sciatica , nerve compression , arthritis , baker's cyst or injury to knee . I would suggest you to apply warm compresses to knee , take proper rest , do gentle massage and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain . Consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination , who may order CT scan or MRI to confirm the diagnosis . Doctor may prescribe muscle relaxant , anti inflammatory , vitamin supplement and recommend physical therapy or particular exercises . Doctor may also go for surgery if needed .
