What Causes Numbness And Pain In Jaw?

I am seemingly contradictory symptoms--acute pain in my jaw but numbness (as if I had been injected with novocaine and it is slowly wearing off) in the region of my face around the jaw. This has been going for about 11 hours (at least). Previously, I was just experiencing head and jaw aches (for about a week) which, while painful, at least seemed straightforward. But the numbness is, in a word, weird.

A problem in the jaw joint(s) could lead to alternating pain and numbness. Avoid biting on hard foods and chew slowly with equal pressure on both sides. If this does not help, see a dentist.
