What Causes Numbness In Leg And Foot While Having Osteoarthritis In Hip?

When I am sitting up in bed, after a period of time (roughly 30 minutes or more) my right leg and foot fall asleep. This has been happening for about two weeks now. I have Osteoarthritis in my left hip. Could this be causing the numbness? What can I do to stop it?

Hi,

Yes, the osteoarthritis in your left hip may be causing numbness in your right leg and foot. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that can cause pain and stiffness in the affected joint. It can also lead to compression or irritation of nerves that run through or near the joint.

In your case, the osteoarthritis in your left hip may be causing you to sit or lie in a way that puts pressure on the nerves in your right leg, leading to numbness. It is important to note that other conditions or factors can also contribute to numbness in the leg and foot, such as spinal stenosis, herniated discs, or peripheral neuropathy.

To help relieve the numbness, you can try changing your position or using pillows to support your hips and legs while sitting or lying down. Gentle stretching and exercises recommended by a physical therapist can also help improve mobility and relieve pressure on the affected nerves.

In addition, managing your osteoarthritis through medication, weight management, and regular exercise can help reduce pain and stiffness, which may also improve your overall mobility and reduce the likelihood of numbness in the future. It is important to talk to your healthcare provider about your symptoms to rule out any other underlying causes and determine the best course of treatment for your specific condition.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

You have OA in the hips and presently you are experiencing numbness in the leg and foot. Symptoms of OA are relieved with medicines (analgesics or NSAIDs), heat, ice, physical therapy, shots, and joint-supporting devices like braces. You are experiencing numbness in the legs due to arthritic changes that put pressure on a nerve.

Numbness and tingling can be experienced in the hands, or legs. Numbness (with or without tingling)means that a nerve is affected by the arthritic changes in your bones. You are suggested to get treated OA. Get clinically examined by a Neurologist. Get, EMG tests and MRI done.

OA is commonly treated with medication (in some cases surgery, too), and physical therapy. Sometimes, it can also be due to vitamin B deficiency. Take food rich in vitamin B12, B6 or supplements to correct developing peripheral neuropathy.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
