What Causes Numbness In The Area Surrounding The Ear Canal?

For the past week or so, I have been having what seems to be numbness in the area surronding the ear canal. I can only describe it as the feeling of a local anestetic applies to that area. There is no pain, but very irratating. Would you have any idea what it might be. Thank you
