What Causes Numbness In The Arm, Elbow And Hand At Night?

Hello Dr. Andrew Rynne... During the past 2-3 weeks, when I lay down to go to sleep at night, I awake during the middle of the night with my right arm, elbow down to my right hand, NUMB. At first it felt like I was sleeping on it wrong and it fell asleep ... but during the past 2 weeks, especially last night, it was just VERY PAINFUL, with a THROBBING the likes I have never felt before. I got out of bed at 4:00AM and attached a TENS DEVICE t the arm / hand, and it seemed to bring relief and I was able to get some sleep. ANY IDEA WHAT THIS COULD BE? What the cause could be?

Hi,

The pain in the arm you have is due to pressure on verve supplying the affected part in the neck region. Maybe due to wrong posture/due to cervical rib causing the pressure (due to age wise drooping shoulder posture)/taking a thick pillow.

-Use no/very thin pillow, keep the shoulder braced up to avoid pressure/take pain medicine over the counter.
-X-ray /MRI would pinpoint the cause followed by specific treatment (pain medicine/physiotherapy/surgery in few cases.
-Consult an orthopedic surgeon.
