Hi there and than you! I have bi lateral hip replacements and both feet are numb. Its getting worse and creeping up my lower legs. I don t have diabetes, I have had a MRI with no nerve compression, a podiatrist couldn t find anything. Should I see an orthopaedic surgeon or a Neurologists. My original surgeon has retired. Help.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can. If both feet are numb, then I don't think this is related to hip surgery and this is more likely to be neuropathy due to other causes such as metabolic, demielinization or lumbar spine compression and you should do more detailed neurolgoic examination.

This is seen in diabetic or alcoholic neuropathy or peripheral nerve compressions, and you need to do EMG testing.

I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us anytime.

Wish you a good health.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
