What Causes Numbness In The Finger Tips And Weight Gain?

I m having numbness in my fingertips on both hands periodically, this has been the case for approx. 2 months thus far, and I m concerned about what could possibly be the issue. I had a rapid weight gain this past year, which is not at all like normal, since most of the time my weight has been steady. I was at around 245lbs and now am at over 280lbs (6 4 tall). I am 58 years old, and have had annual physical examinations every year, where things have improved except for this past year. I have never been diagnosed with having diabetes, and have had my blood tested before my annual physical. Can you please give me some advise as to what I might be dealing with, and should I be concerned?

Hi,

Hand numbness is usually caused by damage, irritation or compression of one of the nerves or a branch of one of the nerves in your arm and wrist. Diseases affecting the peripheral nerves, such as diabetes, also can cause numbness, although with diabetes similar symptoms usually occur first in your feet.

However, your symptoms indicate that there is compressive neuropathy which is seen in carpal canal syndrome or cubital syndrome. You need to do EMG first to confirm the diagnosis and then it can be treated with local steroid shots or surgical decompression. Also, physical therapy may be beneficial.
