What Causes Numbness In The Fingers After An IV Injection?

I had an IV yesterday, but the nurse blew my vein. She was in there digging around and all of a sudden all my fingers except my thumb go numb. She tells me she blew my vein and takes it out. She said it would be sore and bruise. And it is, but also, when I touch anywhere around the area, all of my fingers go numb again.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Poor injection technique can cause nerve damage. There are plenty of nerves around vein. So poor technique of venous sample collection can actually damage surrounding nerves. This damage can lead to numbness in fingers and pain at local area. Usually no treatment is required except ice pack application. Usual time for nerve regeneration and repair is 1-2 weeks. So wait for 1-2 weeks, your symptoms will definitely subside.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
