What Causes Numbness In The Hands And Feet While Having Hypothyroidism?

I developed numbness or tingling in both hands in my pinky, ring and middle finge about 9 days ago. It also is impacting the bottom of my feet, especially in heel area. About 4 days ago a noticed a band around my abdomen that feel the same asleep sensation. I have RA and went to the rheumatologist and he did spine X-rays and is waiting for approval for a thoracic and lumbar MRI. It is driving me crazy and depressing me at this point. I can t see the neurologist until 8/1 who specializes in Neuropathy. I also have hypothyroidism. I have a high tolerance to pain and I am reaching the end of my rope and they don t even know what is causing it.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Usually, this is self-limiting and there is no specific cause but if this persists then various causes for arm numbness may persist like dehydration, diabetes, hypothyroidism, menopause, lack of B complex vitamins.

You may also have nerve compression problems which were suspected in your prior consultations which must have aggravated, however at what level it varies and needs clinical evaluation, with nerve conduction studies with or without MRI.

It is very common to get such types of numbness and pain in stress and in deep anxiety state, however to be on safe side, you should consult a doctor and get your cardiac status checked along with other relevant investigations for the causes as mentioned above.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
