What Causes Numbness In The Hands And Fingers?

My left hand becomes slightly numb on occasions and my fingers become stiff and lock up. The numbness in the hand and the fingers locking do not necessarily occur at the same time. Recently I have experienced a muscle spasm in my hand that is acutely painful. I have noticed a hard muscle lump in the area of the thumb muscle during the muscle spasm. Also, a hard muscle lump in the area of the little finger muscle. The muscle spasms last for 10-15 seconds at a time and are extremely painful.

Hand numbness is usually caused by damage, irritation or compression of one of the nerves or a branch of one of the nerves in your arm and wrist.Diseases affecting the peripheral nerves, such as diabetes, also can cause numbness, although with diabetes similar symptoms usually occur first in your feet.
However, your symptoms indicate that there is compressive neuropathy which is seen in carpal canal syndrome or cubital syndrome. You need to do EMG first to confirm diagnosis and then it can be treated with local steroid shots or surgical decompression. Also, physical therapy may be beneficial.
