What Causes Numbness In The Mouth After Taking Benadryl?

Had a reaction to handling/cooking, not eating, fish last Monday. Dr prescribed prednisone for the week with decreasing amounts each day. Also Benadryl for tightness in throat when it comes. I get spasms in back and a feeling like heartburn when I am reacting to allergens. Took some liquid Benadryl and it makes my soft tissues, mouth and throat, feel numb. Is this common?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of numbness in the mouth after taking Benadryl which seems to be due to allergic reaction to one of the in-gradient i.e diphenhydramine hydro-chloride and it is very common in female. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to avoid intake of Benadryl for tightness in throat and heart burn. You should avoid intake of sharp and spicy food and do warm saline gargles. You should take throat lozenges. Avoid cold beverages. Visit ENT specialist once if symptoms keeps on persisting and go for proper course of antibiotics along with anti-inflammatory medications. Maintain cleanliness of oral cavity.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
