What Causes Numbness In The Right Side Of The Abdomen?

I have weakness in my right leg that has been gradually getting worse. It has been going on for over 10 years, but now I am unable to walk because i cannot lift it. Also, i have occasional numbness in the right side of my abdomen. Three years ago I was diagnosed with Transverse myelitis at the brain stem, which was mild and caused weakness in both legs and arms but i was able to walk. The right leg weakness adds to my mobility problems. Recently I had MRIs with and without contrast on my entire spine and brain as well as EMG and was referred to neurosurgeon. Result was same as previous MRI of two years ago except worsening of my degenerative disc disease at the L4-5 and SI. Neurologist says that I have nerve compression but he does not know where it is coming from or what is causing it. Neurosurgeon says my leg weakness is not cause by my spine and so surgery is needed. In the mean time I am unable to walk and seems to get worse.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

There are a variety of reasons people could experience numb or tingling feet and legs. Fibromyalgia is one of this and most common.

Other conditions include multiple sclerosis, diabetes, tarsal tunnel syndrome, peripheral artery disease, and having too much pressure on the nerves. Treatment can be started when the right cause is found. In your case, symptoms indicate that it could be neuropathy or fibromyalgia.

I would suggest doing Doppler ultrasound and EMG for a start. Till then, check your blood sugar and calcium levels since these causes may lead to numbness as well. Though occasional numbness can occur, persistent numbness and tingling can be an indication of a serious underlying medical problem.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein,
General Surgeon
