What Causes Numbness In The Toe?

my right foot pinky toe (last one) has been getting numb sporadically during the day.. there is absolutely no pain.. it occassionally carries over to the 4th toe, but is primarily numb on the pinky (5th) toe.. not sure what could be causing the problem, I haven't had a recent knee or ankle problem.. do you know what it could be?
