What Causes Numbness In The Toes After Ankle Injury?

I m recovering from surgery to a broken and dislocated ankle. Since surgery I ve felt a loss of sensation in my foot, such as touch. Although I can feel my toes they almost feel numb. I m also suffering from a burning sensation which comes and goes. Is this nerve damage due to surgery which will get better over time or something more serious? Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The fracture to the bones and the surgery can both cause damage to the nerves in the area.

Damage to these nerves can cause abnormal function, this is called neuropathy and it would be associated with abnormal sensations and numbness.

In some persons, if the nerves are not completely severed, healing would occur, though this can take months.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
