What Causes Numbness In The Tongue?

I have had a numb feeling on thr right side back of my tongue as well as some difficulty swallowing for about two weeks. It is very slowly getting worse. Could this be a sign of cranial nerve damage? I am 53 years old and have been useing insulin for about 5 years.
