What Causes Numbness In The Upper Legs?

My 30 year old son just called because earlier today he was walking to the bathroom and his upper legs went completely numb and he fell. He was stuck there for a few minutes until he got the feeling back in his legs. He said this is the third time this has happened in the last month or so. He s not in any pain.

Hi, Thank you for using Healthcare Magic, I understand your concern.

The possibility of this condition are:
1. Guillain Barre Syndrome, symptoms that may occur in GBS patients are loss of sensitivity, such as tingling, numbness, burning, or pain, with irregular and volatile distribution patterns. Paralysis in GBS patients usually occurs from the lower body upwards or from the inside out gradually.
2. Muscle pain (myalgia), for example because it is too long standing, rarely exercise
3. Joint pain (arthralgia), eg due to accumulation of uric acid.

Since this is a third time, I suggest your son to consult to Rheumatologist, especially if it accompanied by swelling, limp when moving, or deformity (foot shape changes). The doctor will perform additional test such as laboratory or X-ray examination to determine the cause and make sure that the treatment that will be given is right.

As a first step, your son can do some of the following tips:
- Get enough rest 7-8 hours a day. Limit excessive physical activity using painful feet. Avoid standing for too long.
- Compresses the affected area with cold water or ice water
- Elevate the leg pain during sleep, for example with a pillow supported
- To relieve pain, he can take acetaminophen or diclofenac.

Thank you, and I hope your son get better soon.
