What Causes Numbness On The Finger Tip?

My left tip of the pointer finger has been numb on and off today. The middle inner segment of the finger looks a little purplish. I can massage it away. What could be the cause of this . I do have arthritis in my hands. I don t remember hitting it on anything today.
