What Causes Numbness Over Shoulder Blades?

a patch on the upper left of my back over my shoulder blade gets very numb and uncomfortable and sometimes even my whole shoulder goes to sleep. I can feel something is wrong at the base of my spine also. This happens when I'm sitting. What can I do?
