What Causes Occasional Leg Cramps?

Hi Doctor, My Husband have been suffering occasionally with leg cramp and when he mentioned to his Dr, he told him to go to the store an buy Potassium and magnesium pills. But something is telling me to be careful with this , Can I have your opinion please. Thanks
