What Causes Odor From A Drained Painful Boil Near Vagina?

I had a very painful boil closer to my vagina then groin. It was difficult to walk as it was so agonizing. Unfortunately I do not have medical aid and the cost to have it lanced was too much so I lanced it myself. At first there was very little drainage, however through the night it drained substantially offering alot of relief. The swelling was as big as a golf ball. At present there is a bit of a crater. The soft puss in the middle has drained but the diameter is still the same and very hard. My concern us the smell? I have suffered from boils for many years, no antibiotic treatment has helped.but I have never had one this big which smells foul. Also I have had chills the last 2 days. What do I do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I am sorry for the situation you are in.

Having painful boil near vagina is suggestive for possible abscess (infected hair follicle). It is good that you have drained, but, to my opinion, you need to get it surgically removed. You might have drained only one part of the boil, but there is still pus in its inner part that should be surgically removed.

Antibiotic therapy is advised orally, together with local treatment:
- clean the wound with warm water and soap
- rinse it well
- apply iodine locally
- then, apply antibiotic ointment locally

Once again, at this point, you should go to ER and get immediate help there.

Wish fast recovery!
