What Causes On And Off Numbness In Left Side Of Body With Spinal Pain?

My left side goes numb on and off during the day and at night. I have pain on the left side at the base of my spine and at the top of my spine both on the left side. My left arm goes numb in the top part between shoulder and elbow. If I don t shake it or move position my whole arm and leg will go numb.

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms make me think it could be transient ischemic attack which can be defined as mini stroke where blood supply to the brain gets interrupted only temporarily, a stroke, electrolyte disturbances, cervical spondylitis, cervical radiculopathy involving compression of nerve roots, lumbar disc disease or peripheral neuropathy.

You need to have a detailed clinical evaluation and if necessary few investigations like MRI brain and spine. Please do consult a neuro-physician for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
