What Causes One Leg To Be Thinner Than The Other?

My right leg is thinner than the left in the muscle area below the knee there is a difference of nearly 2 cm,my right ankle is swollen around the bone feels like jelly. I have had waist problems (trapped nerve). A few years ago it happened again but in my right knee,is there a connection and should I be worried.
