What Causes Onset Of Periods In Early Fifties?

I am in my early 50s and have had no period at all since i went off the low dose pill 6 months ago, BUT NOW I am having a FULL ON period just like when I was a teenager. Can I have unprotected sex and not get pregnant in this situation as I do NOT want to take any risks at my age. Thanks, MEME.
