What Causes Oral Ulcers And Inflammation In The Mouth?

I have a raw mouth, checks, gums and at times small white blisters. My dentist treated me for herpes with valacyclovir 500mg 4 one time and 4 again within a 12 hr period. I would say it didn't improve. This has been going on for 2 months. Any suggestions? I did change my toothpaste.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Well, your symptoms are not looking like herpes rather they are appearing like Apthous stomatitis leading to Apthous ulcers..

As you changed your toothpaste and in case if the ulcers started to erupt after the use of new toothpaste then it can be very much due to Allergic reaction to the contents of the toothpaste .

I would therefore suggest you to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated..
An oral swab culture and of needed a blood test to check for viral infection and allergies will be done for confirmation..
A biopsy of the ulcers will also give a clear picture..

As of now you can gargle with numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine.
You should start taking Vitamin B complex supplements daily..
Suck ice pops and drink plenty of cool water..
Gargle with 1:1 solution of milk of magnesia and Benadryl....
So warm saline gargle..

Hope this helps..

Regards..

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern

1. Since herpes simplex virus is the most commonest infectious cause of mouth sore for which you have received treatment but since the condition is persisting for 2 months thus one has to exclude other causes of the same, like:

- Lichen planus, celiac disease, pemphigus vulgaris, and bullous pemphigoid can cause sores/blisters in mouth, and also look for nutritional deficiency like deficiency of iron, vitamin B and vitamin C

2. You should see a Doctor to do a general and physical examination to look for signs of systemic disorders that could affect the mouth and to ensure that the sore is not cancerous or precancerous.
