What Causes Pain After Pulling A Tampon Out?

Hi, I used a tampon for the first time and it took it out cause it felt weird. So it hurt really badly when I took it out and after 10 minutes it still hurts. My mom said it was because I took it out after I had just put it in so my Vag. was dry. Is this true? Why does it still hurt?
