What Causes Pain And Cracking Sound In The Right Leg?

My husband is being treated to recover from a ruptured Achilles tendon of his left leg. He wears a boot and is not supposed to bear weight on it yet. The injury happened on Sept 16,2016. He is taking a non surgical route of treatment. Tonight he felt a pop in his is good right leg!! He is in pain and now cannot put weight on that leg! I gave him Advil and have been icing it and keeping it elevated. I wanted to take him to an Urgent Care clinic but he refused. He is 68 years old, but was not at all sedentary, always active, strong and runs a Contracting Business. He feels this happened because of compensating for the injured left leg. What could it be????

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
Your description sounds like a stress fracture which is common with age.I will suggest you take him to the hospital for examination and an x ray. Also, an idea of his bone mineral density will be very useful. In the meantime, you may try the following:
-Cold/heat therapy
-Pain drug like aceclofenac
-Local pain gel like voltaren
-Rest
Hope this will help
Wish your husband a speedy recovery
