What Causes Pain And Discomfort While Opening The Mouth And Eating?
Hi Dr.! I feel pain in my zygomatic bone(although not really sure if its in the zygomatic arch). However, I usually feel pain when I open my mouth or when i m chewing food (only on the left side, just beside my ear). Its not painful when I m talking or when i m pressing on it though. I can t eat hard foods and it usually takes me more time to eat as I have to chew slowly because of the pain. Its been two weeks now and I couldn t think of anything that might have caused it. Someone told me to visit a dentist or have a tooth x-ray as it might be my wisdom tooth erupting on the wrong direction but my wisdom tooth erupted already so I don t think its the cause. What might it be? Should I be worried? ☺And should I visit a dentist or an ENT doctor? Thanks.. Kind regards.. Lhen
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..
As per your complain pain on opening and closing the mouth along with pain on chewing hard foods that too only on the left side beside my ear seems to be due to Temporomandibular joint dysfunction commonly referred to as TMJ/TMD.. I would suggest you to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and a full mouth x ray known as Orthopantomogram can help in diagnosis.. As of now you can take painkillers like Ibuprofen, muscle relaxants like Chlorzoxasone and take a soft diet with more of fluids.. You can also limit excess mouth opening.. Do warm compresses over the painful area and also massage the muscles of the side of face in round motions with tip of fingers..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora..
