What Causes Pain And Dryness Sensation In The Eyes?

my friend last night pain in left eye with dry sensation. This morning became painful the whole left side of head. Her left eye very light sensitive, very bloodshot in the white of the eye. Took her to eye doctor said they found inflamatory cells in the liquid behind the eye. Could this be a symptom of autoimmune disease? or could it be viral, allergy related? Fran
