What Causes Pain And Infection At The Tooth Extraction Site?

Hi. I had a tooth extracted three days ago and its still sore. I have a antibiotic that says to take every six hours as needed. im not sure what they mean by as needed but i take it whenever my tooth starts to hurt and at least six hours apart. I notice white puss inside the extraction site. Not sure if it suppose to look like that or did i get an infection. i brush regularly avoiding the site and i also rinse carefully with warm salt water daily. Something white fell out after eating. Help

Hi Dear,

Welcome to Health Care Magic Team.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query your had extraction of your tooth three days ago and its still paining and infection is there, this could possibly be the case of dry socket. Normally it takes 2-3 days for a tooth socket after extraction to heal. But pain and infection along with it means use of force by dentist was quiet high while extraction of your tooth. You pain can radiates to ear and head region as well.

Need not to worry. Use saline gargles on hourly basis. Take ice cold water, ice creams for better healing. Do not touch the socket with bristles of brush as that will exaggerate your symptoms. Take soft food and cool it before having it.

Take a combination of ibuprofen and paracetamol but if you have any medical condition like asthma do not take ibuprofen in that case.

Visit dentist for dressing of area of socket as on daily basis dressing the area will heal and result in new bone formation in that area. Donot use suction pressure inside mouth. Donot touch socket with tongue as it will makes symptoms worse.

After proper dressing, gargles, antibiotic combination your symptoms will resolve in 4-7 days.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get well soon.

Best wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
