What Causes Pain And Itching Sensation On Lower Back?

Hi, over the period of the last week I ve been having a lot of back pain with a very slight itch. At first I thought it was shingles. I ve had shingles three times in my life now and the pain and itch start out feeling like that. However I felt pain and an itch on a Saturday last week. I had my wife and my mother in law look at my back and there was nothing there then the next day I went to give my dog a bath, took off my shirt and my wife notice what looks to be a 3 inch long bruise at a slightly off vertical angle on the rfrom side of my spine a little of half way up. I went into the doctor the following day with emense pain in my back. It was an aching pain with an overwhelming dull pain and a slight sharpness to it. When I went in the doctor fully expected shingles but when she looked at it she described it more like a bunch of burst blood vessels under the skin, eg a bruise. They didn t know what to tell me so instead the drew some blood and sent it to a lab ... I ve not yet got the lab results, however last night my wife noticed yet another spot on my back same angle about an inch higher than the first one and on the left side of my spine. It looks like it may be traveling up toward my neck both of them are there now the first one has lighted up from the dark red that it was and looks like it may be going away ... The second looks just like the first one does now.... Any idea what this might be .. Also today I m suffering emense pain in my back bending over sitting down and laying down. I have not sustained any injury that could ve caused this that I know of .

Hi,

It is difficult to determine the exact cause of your symptoms without a physical examination and further diagnostic tests. However, some possible causes of pain and itching sensation in the lower back include:
* Bruising: If you have sustained an injury to the lower back, it could result in bruising that can cause pain and itching.
* Shingles: Even though your symptoms started similar to shingles, the appearance of the rash is usually different from what you describe. But it is still possible.
* Infection: A bacterial or fungal infection can cause pain and itching on the skin.
* Allergic reaction: It is possible that you may have come into contact with an allergen that has caused an allergic reaction on your skin, resulting in pain and itching.
* Dermatitis: An inflammation of the skin on your lower back, known as dermatitis, can cause pain and itching.

It is important to follow up with your doctor to get the lab results and receive a proper diagnosis and treatment. In the meantime, you can try over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-itch creams to help manage your symptoms. If your symptoms become severe or you develop a fever, seek medical attention immediately.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
