What Causes Pain And Redness On The Right Foot?

My husband, age 82, is diabetic but controlled with medication. Currently he has pain and redness on the top of his right foot. It seems swollen to me but he is in denial. Last week he had testing for blood pressure on, I believe, 8 body points through referral to his cardiologist as his doctor had not gotten a pulse in his feet earlier. He has an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in foot and ankle problems. With his current condition is it safe to wait until his Tuesday appointment. We do not get the cardiologist s report until this Thursday, 10 days after his test. I, obviously am worried.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is good to know that your husbands blood sugar level is in control. Since he has developed pain & redness on the top of his right toe, it needs immediate medical attention.

Diabetic neuropathy sometimes leads to serious issues like ulcers, infections, numbness, inability to heal if left neglected which ultimately leads to gangrene & further complications. He may need antibiotics(oral medications or injections) depending upon the severity of the inflammation. For pain, you can give him Ibuprofen when needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
