What Causes Pain And Swelling In Ankle Bone With Vomiting After Injury?

Stepped into pothole three days ago. Turned ankle inward. Heard and felt Pop. Severe instant pain to almost vomiting. Swelling. Min bruising. Swelling remains. Very tender to even touch skin over ankle bone. Walking ok but pain with flexing and extending. Should I be concerned of fracture? Resting as much as possible n ibuprofen and ice. But continued swelling and discomfort

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

If the swelling and pain is progressive despite icing, ibuprofen and immobilisation for 48 hours, kindly see an orthopedist, as we have to rule our fracture or ligament tears needing prolonged and strict immobilisation. Surgery is rarely needed for ankle injuries.

Meanwhile, give rest to the joint, keep it elevated and continue ibuprofen. Vomiting may be an autonomic response to sever pain, and need not be worried if head was not hit. It will resolve with pain control.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
