What Causes Pain And Swelling In Ears Of A Child?

My 9 yr. Old daughter just recently had experienced her left ear hurting and had swollen to twice its size and also turned red the redness moved into her face beside her ear also by the next morning. Her Dr. Put her on ammoxicillian antibiotics for ten days 2x a day. But the Dr. Couldn t tell me whether it was an allergy to metals in her earrings or she had been bitten by something without her knowledge of it. I have a 10yr. Old daughter as well and me concerned about heredity to an allergy took away all earrings from both girls. Which has made my oldest very upset. I m confused about it though, if it was a nickel allergy or (metal) wouldn t she have had a allergic reaction to BOTH ears instead of just ONE??? And also wouldn t she experience reactions form bracelets and necklaces also???? And is it normal to develop this allergy all of the sudden after yrs. Of no problems??? And should I be so cautious of my other daughter because of my youngest going thru this???? Please help me to understand about this allergy so I can provide a better decision concerning both my daughters!!!

Hi,

Pain and swelling in the ear can have various causes, including infection, trauma, inflammation, and allergies. It is difficult to determine the exact cause of your daughter's symptoms without a proper examination by a healthcare provider. If the doctor has prescribed antibiotics, it suggests that an infection may be the cause of ear pain and swelling. Infections of the ear can occur in both ears or only one ear, so your daughter can experience symptoms in only one ear.

Nickel allergy is a common type of metal allergy, and it can cause symptoms like itching, redness, and swelling when the skin comes in contact with nickel-containing items, such as earrings, necklaces, or bracelets. However, not everyone who is allergic to nickel will develop symptoms on both sides of the body. Some people may only experience symptoms on one side, and the severity of the reaction can also vary from person to person.

If you suspect that your daughter may have a nickel allergy, it is recommended to avoid nickel-containing items, such as jewelry and clothing with metal buttons or zippers. You can also have her tested for allergies by an allergist to determine if she has any other allergies that may be causing her symptoms. It is important to consult with your daughter's healthcare provider if she experiences any symptoms or if you have any concerns about her health. They can provide further guidance and advice on how to manage her symptoms and prevent future occurrences.
