What Causes Pain And Swelling In Finger Radiating Towards Wrist?

I have been having swelling in my left wrist that begins on my ring finger. The swelling runs from my ring finger up my wrist and arm a little. This occurs every 6 months or so and usually will last a couple weeks. This time it seems to be lasting longer. It causes some pain and is hot to the touch. I have been putting some ice on this area for the last day or so, wondering what could be the problem.
