What Causes Pain And Swelling In My Mother's Thumb?

My mom has been suffering from constant pain in her thumbs in both hands, she has started to develop a terminal extension deformity. she does not present with swelling or redness and her Rheumatology factor is negative. I am not able to find out what exactly is the problem with her. Can you help?
