What Causes Pain And Swelling In The Left Elbow?

My husband had a pacemaker installed in his chest on the left side three days ago and now he is having quite an issue with stabbing pain in his left elbow with some swelling and redness. Is this related to the pacemaker? I called the physician on call and he told me to have my husband come in tomorrow morning or if there is a lot of concern take him to the ER. He has had two blood clots in the past after surgery on his leg and arm? Could this type of surgery cause another blood clot?

Hi,

It is most likely a condition called bursitis which ma be caused by trauma or by any other irritation of cubital bursa, a small fat pad in elbow. At this point your should rest with elbow, apply ice, take nonsteroid painkilllers and elevate your arm and put elastic compress. . It should lead to symptom improvement within 12 hours. Later,if there is no improvement, it would be advisable to do X-rays and see if fracture exist. Also, hematoma or seroma accumulation may persist and then elbow punction and fluid evacuation should be done by doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
