What Causes Pain And Swelling In The Leg After A Surgery?

After surgery to repair a broken femur my legs began to swell...edema set in and exstreme pain in my hip area hampers my ability to lie down to lift my legs. The only time I m relieved of pain is when I m sitting. I am at therapy sessions 3 times a week and I don t seem to be improving. I m a stage 2 diabetic and have high blood pressure and am being medicated for both. I was tested for kidney problems and was relieved to know there isn t a problem. My surgeon took a second look at new X-rays to see if he could find a hair line crack in my hip, leg and knee area and couldn t fine any. He recommended more exercises. Nothing seems to be helping. My email YYYY@YYYY thank you for your consideration

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I will be reviewing your problem and of that it would be helpful to you. any lower Limb surgery or prolonged immobilization leads to venous stasis that can lead to Deep vein thrombosis so you may be suffering from dbt deep venous thrombosis. you need to undergo colour venous Doppler offloading lower limb to rule out dbt. you should take rest and elevate the affected Limb. Consult a good vascular surgeon after geting colour Doppler.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
