What Causes Pain And Swelling In Tonsils?

A couple days ago I woke up with what I thought was a sore throat, but it wasn't the scratchy type of pain. It got worse after a day or two and it hurts to swallow. I don't think it's the back of my throat, the pain is in my tonsils. It doesn't hurt to talk or anything, just when I swallow. It doesn't look like my tonsils are swollen and I might have a few small tonsil stones. Other than those two things I have no other problems. However, there's one really dark, big vein on my right tonsil and I don't know if it's been like that or if it has something to do with the pain. I wanted to know if this could be a sign of something serious. Does anyone have any idea as to what could be happening?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain pain in tonsils on swallowing along with presence of tonsil stones seems to be most probably due to inflammation of tonsils as Tonsil stones or tonsilloliths are common cause for tonsillitis or tonsil inflammation and also throat infection..
Dark and big vein on the right tonsil seems to be due to inflammation only..
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like throat swab culture can help in diagnosis..
First of the the physician will gently remove the tonsil stones so that the source of recurring infection is removed..
You can also be advised a course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen and also do warm saline gargles and suck throat lozenges..
For reducing occurrence of tonsil stones you can start gargling with 1:1 solution of hydrogen peroxide and water.
Always gargle with atleast plain water after meals..
Limit intake of dairy..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
