What Causes Pain And Swelling On The External Side Of Wrist?

I did something to my wrist several weeks ago; the pain and swelling is on the outside of my left wrist (not thumb side); after several weeks of wearing a wrist brace, I did have it x-ray d and that was negative. teh swellng is on the side and slightly underside of the wrist bone; the pain stretches about 2 inches along this area. I have not problem typing or holding anything as long as the wrist/hand is straight. If my arm is turned so that the outside is to the ground (thumb up toward ceiling) and bend it down or hold anything with weight, there is pain and if heavy - I can t hold it.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

Pain on the external side can be very common.
It can result from injury of the ligaments or tendons.
Inflammation or irritation of the tendons that bend and extend the wrist can cause the pain.
I suggest using a brace to maintain the wrist immobilized.
I also suggest using cold compresses and anti inflammatory medications such as Acetaminophen to relieve the pain.

Hope my answer was helpful.

If you have further queries feel free to contact me again.

Kind regards!
