What Causes Pain And Tenderness In Index Finger?

My left index finger is incredibly tender. Yesterday I woke up with pain in that knuckle, but today the pain has spread down my hand. It hurts to bend my finger or straighten it. And moving my adjacent middle finger causes pain, too. I didn't hit anything, so I don't think I could have broken it. What's going on?
