What Causes Pain Around The Knee?

I have been having knee pain for over a week, now it is too the point I am having trouble getting to sleep. cant get comfortable. Pain is in left knee from the outside to the inside running just below the knee cap to the back of the knee. I have done nothing to my knowledge to cause this to happen. But maybe I did.
