What Causes Pain Around The Toe Nail?

My big toe around the nail hurts intermittently - and has been doing so for weeks. I thought it was an ingrown nail. But I have that removed or cut away every 2 weeks or so. It throbs and can wake me up at night. It looks swollen and is sore to touch.

Hi,

The swelling and tenderness may indicate that an infection is present especially if there is no history of trauma. Infections can vary from mild to severe and may be due to bacteria or fungal , in terms of the feet. Viral or parasitic infections are not common in this area.

An anti inflammatory pain killer would help with the pain, that is Ibuprofen, Cataflam, Naproxen but you may need an antibiotic or anti fungal to treat the infection aspect. It may be best to see your doctor for an assessment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
