What Causes Pain At The Base Of The Skull?

When I lay on my right side the area on the rightist in the back of my neck right at neck meeting skull area hurts when I lay on it. I have not injured it. It has been a couple weeks now. At first I thought I needed to go to chiropractor, I went it did not help. I know years ago doc found I had a pituitary gland tumor and so I would get annual MRI s. Have not had an MRI in years. It always said it was not growing. As well as it is in the front of my head and I was having headaches. It feels different on my neck area just a bit from where I described. So it hurts that area when I try and sleep on that side.

Hi,

Pain in the right side of neck where it meets the skull base can be due to the following reasons:

1) Muscles getting sore and not healing as this is a mobile part and the muscles of the neck get originated from this area.
2) There can be nerve entrapment.
3) Presence of some tumor or cyst like a sebaceous cyst.

Since, this has been going on for a couple of weeks indicate that it is because of one of the reasons as I mentioned.

And can be diagnosed by the following:
1) Clinical examination by your Doctor.
2) Taking a muscle relaxant with an anti-inflammatory medication.
3) Local application of a Rubefacient ointment.
4) Ultrasonography of the area where there is a lump. Pituitary gland tumor is usually not associated with such symptoms, hence not to be related to neck pain; but surely needs an MRI of the pituitary gland to know the exact position and get operated if required.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
