What Causes Pain At The Base Of The Thumb?

I have pain at the base of my right thumb. It only hurts if I move my hand in certain ways, or if I try to lift a cup of coffee. I had an injection four weeks ago with only slight relief so my physician tried another shot this morning. So far no noticeable effect.

Hello,

Very likely you are having De Quervain tendinitis. Local shots with steroids are used to relieve inflammation but sometimes patients will need to use a brace to reduce the movement in the area and help the tendon heal.
You might need to talk with your doctor and see the chance of using a brace which I think will help a lot with the symptoms if combined with the shots.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
