What Causes Pain Behind Ears?

Good Afternoon, I have been to the doctors twice now with a mild ear infection which they treated with a z pack. I don't have an ear ache but I am still getting pain behind my ear down my neck. I went back and they said that there is no ear infection. The pain is going away when I take motrin several times a day, but it is now going on 4 weeks since the pain started. Also the pain is more prevalent when laying down. Any ideas?

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

Your symptoms suggest that there is an infection of the porous bone, called Mastoid, behind the ear. The condition is known as Mastoiditis, which would require a longer-term course of suitable antibiotics.

Diagnosis of Mastoiditis necessitates an X-ray or ideally, MRI of the mastoid bone.

Consult your ENT specialist and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me, order MRI, and- based on the report- will prescribe suitable treatment..

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.
