What Causes Pain Behind Rib Cage?

I have pain which seems to be behind my rib cage at the front about 4 inches above my waist, also in my back but slightly higher up. Ihave had this for about a week but have had it b efore. It seems to make my whole rib cage ache with the occasional sharp pain. what could this be
