What Causes Pain Behind The Left Ear?

Wednesday night I experienced severe pain behind my left ear, near the base of the skull, into the neck area. I felt some swelling near the base of skull and it was extremely painful radiating into the left rear area of my head. Now the pain has subsided, but that same area is painful to touch and is numb. Any ideas what is going on?

Ho..
Thanks for the query..

The explanation is pointing towards Infection and inflammation of the mastoid process leading to Mastoiditis..

You should consult an Emergency room and get evaluated..
A clinical examination and x ray can be done..

You can be advised a course of antibiotics along with anti inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen and do cool compresses over the area..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
