What Causes Pain Between The Shoulder Blades Upon Breathing?

I have been experiencing pain between my shoulder blades in my mid back which is causing pain when I take deep breaths. When lying down it s worse and makes normal breathing difficult and can t sleep. I feel pain behind my sternum that goes to the bottom of my rib cage.
