What Causes Pain From Ankle To Thigh?

I have pain from ankle to outside of thigh. Lower back also hurts. No position is comfortable. Same amount of pain when sitting, lying down or walking. More pain when going up a couple of steps. Am on warfarin for other problems and can only take Tylenol Xtra strength. (doesn't help much). Allergic to codeine. What can this be? Went to chiropractor and he thought 'shin splints' . recommended alternating heating pad then ice for 15 min. each, always beginning and ending with heat. do this for an hour or so morning and night. I have been doing this for 4 days now and no relief is in sight. Can you help?
