What Causes Pain In Thigh Muscles When Climbing Stairs?

I have pain in my thigh muscles when climbing stairs. It has gotten worse with time. I have ridden a cycle for 40 years. I am not out of breadth. I used to be able to climb several flights with no effect now it is just a few stairs before the pain starts.
